Born in Jamaica on 6 March 1914, his Lordship received his early education at the De Carteret School and Munro College, Jamaica, and was called to the English Bar by the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple on 29 June 1938.
His Lordship held a number of offices in Jamaica, Kenya and Uganda before coming to Sarawak in 1958 to assume office as Attorney-General Sarawak. His Lordship was noted for having changed the old and traditional system of rule by decree to that of one of rule of law while holding that office. His Lordship took the oath of office of a Chief Justice on Saturday 11 September 1965, an office which he held until his retirement on 27 August 1968.
